Dear Queercon Family -
The Board members and the organizing committee of Queercon have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and its growing impact on everyone’s daily lives and livelihoods, as well as its impact on community events and conferences. Even though Hacker Summer Camp is still a few months away, we recognize that the economic, health, and social effects of this crisis will require significant recovery time and feel that the Queercon community has important areas to focus on right now - primarily their own health and safety, and that of their loved ones.
We are currently living in a world of deep uncertainty, and while we would love to bring the Queercon community together during our annual conference, we believe the community’s health and safety comes first. With careful consideration of the ongoing crisis, travel restrictions, and keeping the needs of our community at the forefront of our decisions, we have made the brutally difficult decision to cancel this year’s Queercon events in Las Vegas, focus our energy on providing alternative community building efforts, and regain strength for 2021. It is with frustration, sadness, and yes, “heavy hearts” that we reach this decision, and we believe that each of you deserves as much advance notice as we can provide.
The effects of COVID-19 have put an obvious damper on the livelihood of community-based conferences. However, we are doing everything we can to ensure the future continuation of Queercon and to boost engagement and support of our attendees throughout these strange times. In the coming months, we will be focusing on some back-of-house organization and working to provide you with creative ways to keep our community thriving. We are exploring options for hosting virtual events and better platforms to engage the community year-round, such as online meetups and mixers, and a community newsletter. Updates and details will continue to be shared via our Telegram channels, Twitter (@Queercon) and our website (queercon.org).
If you would like to get involved as we build our digital presence, or if you have ideas on how to support our community through this challenging time, please reach out to us at [email protected].
We deeply appreciate the community coming together in such an unprecedented way to curb the spread and devastation of the COVID-19 virus. We understand our decision to cancel this year’s conference may cause inconveniences for you. If you pre-registered last year, we will refund your registration deposit, and we will be reaching out to you directly in the coming weeks via the email address provided at pre-registration time.
For any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
Each of you are valued members of the Queercon family, and from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for trusting in us and for continuing to champion our uniquely diverse community. Without support from our sponsors, volunteers, suppliers, and attendees, Queercon simply would not be what it is.
Thank you all, and please stay safe and healthy!
The Queercon Board
